Episode 4: When the Wind Blows

That day, I got a call from the police.

They told me they’d found the owner of the wallet I turned in a while ago.

「They mentioned they’d like to come by to thank you, so would it be alright if I gave them your address?」

「I don’t mind, but please tell them they don’t really need to do anything to thank me.」

I figured they’d probably show up anyway, but I turned them down just in case.

It felt like a bit of a hassle, and it’s not like I turned it in expecting a reward.

I didn’t give the person who found my wallet much of a reward either. I gave them some sweets, but they told me that was plenty.

I was feeling a bit restless, so I spent the time cleaning my room.

Ding-dong.

The sound of someone at the door.

Looks like the owner of the wallet is here.

「Coming.」

When I opened the door, two men were standing there.

Both of them were dressed in high-end suits. They looked exactly like the kind of people you’d imagine being company executives.

「I’m sorry for dropping by so suddenly. Are you Takanashi Kazunari-san?」

「Yes.」

「My name is Takenaka. Thank you so much for turning in my wallet. There was an important microSD card inside, so you really saved me.」

When I checked the contents at the police station, I definitely saw something like that.

Apparently, it was more important than the cash or the cards.

It was probably work-related, but as far as I was concerned, I was just glad for him.

「I see. I’m glad to hear that.」

「Yes, thank you truly. Oh, this is just a small token of my gratitude, but please, have some sweets.」

「Thank you. Sorry for the trouble.」

I took the bag of sweets.

It felt pretty heavy, so there might be a lot in there.

I hadn’t been expecting anything, but I’m not going to pretend I’m not happy to get a gift.

「I really wanted to show my appreciation… It’s a matter on our end, but it’s not something that can be settled with a simple thank you…」

「No, I really just turned in a wallet.」

Apparently the sweets weren’t the actual reward, just a greeting.

I see, maybe that’s why the two of them came all this way.

Then, the other man who had been quiet until now spoke up.

「Forgive me for interrupting. I am his boss, and I really wanted to thank you myself.」

If they’re offering more than this… honestly, even a cash reward would be great… but that’s obviously hard to say.

I mean, it’s not like I’m after money.

Turning in the wallet was just a whim, or rather, I just did it because of my own experience. If nobody had returned my wallet, I probably wouldn’t have bothered with this one.

「No, I’m really fine. I already received the sweets.」

「We still feel we must do something… Hmm, how about this? I’ll leave you my business card. You can contact me anytime if anything comes up.」

「Please, let me do the same!」

I have no intention of ever calling, but if it makes them feel better… it’s just taking a business card anyway.

「Understood. Sorry you had to come all this way…」

I took the business cards from the two of them.

…Saba Electronics… These guys were from a huge company. And a Senior Managing Director? That’s insane.

「Well then, thank you truly.」

The two of them left.

A black sedan… it looked like a total luxury car.

I looked at the cards again… The boss’s name was Satsukawa Masaomi-san.

…Satsukawa?

No way…
