That day, I got a call from the police.

The owner of the wallet I’d turned in previously had been found.

“They would like to visit you to express their thanks. Would it be alright if we gave them your address?”

“I don’t mind, but please tell them there’s really no need for any thanks.”

Even as I said that, I figured they’d probably come anyway, but I tried to be polite about it.

It just felt like too much trouble, and it’s not like I returned the wallet expecting anything in return.

When I lost my own wallet before, the person who returned it didn’t get much from me either, just some sweets, and even then, they said that was more than enough.

Feeling somewhat aimless, I passed the time tidying up my room.

    Ding-dong.

    The chime of the doorbell.

Seemed like the wallet’s owner had arrived.

    “Yes?”

When I opened the door, two men in suits stood before me.

Both wore sharp, expensive-looking business suits that gave off the vibe of “We’re company executives.”

“Sorry for the sudden visit. Are you Takanashi Kazunari-san?”

    “Yes.”

“My name is Takenaka. Thank you so much for returning the wallet. It contained a very important microSD card, so we’re truly grateful.”

I remembered seeing something like that when the police had me confirm the contents.

Apparently, it was more important than the cash or the credit cards.

Probably work-related. As far as I was concerned, it was just a “Good thing it turned out okay” kind of situation.

“I see. I’m glad it helped.”

“Yes, thank you very much. Oh, this is just a small token, but please accept these sweets.”

“Thanks, and sorry for the trouble.”

He handed me a bag of sweets.

It had some weight to it, must be quite a few inside.

I hadn’t expected anything, but I have to admit I was happy to receive it, guess I’m pretty materialistic after all.

“I really wanted to do more to express my gratitude, but… Well, this might sound like our problem, but it’s not the kind of thing we can settle with just a simple thank-you…”

“I mean, I just turned in a wallet. It’s no big deal.”

Apparently, the sweets were more of a greeting than a proper thank-you.

Now I understood why the two of them had come all the way here.

Then the man who had stayed silent until now finally spoke up.

“Sorry to interrupt. I’m his superior. I really do wish to show my appreciation in some way.”

If they were offering something more than sweets… Honestly, I wouldn’t mind a cash gift or something. But of course, I couldn’t say that.

It’s not like I helped out expecting money.

I only did it because of my own past experience, because someone had once helped me in the same way. If no one had returned my wallet back then, I probably wouldn’t have felt compelled to turn this one in either.

“No, it’s really fine. I already received some sweets, after all.”

“We still feel we should show our gratitude somehow… Hmm, then how about this? We’ll leave our business cards with you. If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to contact us.”

    “Please accept mine as well!”

Of course, there was no way I’d actually contact them, but if accepting their cards helped them feel better, I didn’t mind.

“Understood. Thank you for coming all this way…”

I accepted both of their cards.

…Saba Electronics… They were from a major company. And one of them was an executive director. That’s impressive.

    “Well then, thank you again.”

    The two of them left.

They got into a black sedan, an unmistakably high-class vehicle.

Looking again at the business card…

The superior’s name was Satsukawa Masaomi.

    …Satsukawa?

    No way…
